Don't Lose Your Domain Name!

by Marc Gunn

That always shocks me. I was composing the shownotes for my Irish & Celtic Music Podcast, checking URLs. One of the bands in this week's show had a domain that was no longer functional. It expired two months ago and was about to be released to the public. Fortunately, I knew her and gave her a call.

She had no idea the domain was ending, but since her band broke up she didn't think it worthwhile to keep the domain running. As she said, "Well, I have the CDBaby page, and a lot of folks are using myspace URLs."

Tis true, tis true. But for everyone who lived through the heyday of MP3.com, you should know never to trust an external domain for your promotion. Myspace.com is a great site. But will it be around in five years? Who knows?

Personally, I put no faith in that. I promote TheBards.net, MarcGunn.com, BardsCrier.com or whatever website I'm promoting. Myspace, SoundClick, even CDBaby are temporary. They could poof disappear any day, God forbid.

Fortunately, you can get domains these days for just $8.99 through sites like GoDaddy.com. Or if you're in my friend's predicament, you can Backorder the site for just $18.99, which means, once the domain becomes free from its current owner, you can re-take control of its ownership if you lost it.

The important thing is don't let this happen to you. You never know when you will need that URL once again. So register your URL and keep it forever.

2 bands needed to fill 2 spots in RVA

I am looking for 2 bands to fill a spot on Friday April 3rd, at a Poe's sized club in Mechanicsville.
The first and third spots are open, money will not be very much most likely, will find out more on that later,
but exposure is always worth more than a few dollars when you are gathering a following.
If your band is free and is interested, or if you know of a band that would be interested, please contact me either at http://www.myspace.com/musicrva or http://profile.to/sojournstarmusic/ ,
and let me know. 2 bands will be chosen, so respond asap.

I am not looking for anything super hard core, mostly alternative, rock and roll, rockabilly, folksy, or any variation
of that in the bands.

New Resource - The Tin Whisker

If you like forums, a new one can be found at The Tin Whisker, run by Daniel Deckelman aka The Rats, Rocket 69, Route 1 South) and you should check it out.

Our senior writer Cindy Johnson is "moonlighting" there. Here is an insert from one of her posts about the band BoneAnchor:

Boneanchor played to a full house at the Triple this weekend. It was a return engagement and the Triple was standing room only on both occasions. This three piece band has a loyal and consistent fan base. I have seen Boneanchor perform many times but have never felt comfortable trying to articulate their style and allure. I could never put my finger on the right words, but here goes. The band members, Morgan, Tom and Wrenn form such a blend of talent it’s hard to place them in any single type of genre. They perform originals and covers spanning several decades with such originality and flare it will make you never hear that cover the same way again.

To read more of this article and check out the forum, go to BoneAnchor

I'm a DirectTV Believer

After years of being ripped off by cable companies, we finally got the best out there, in my opinion, DirectTV. Why you might ask, well because since we have had our satellite, we have been happier, we don't fight over channels (DVR) and there is no longer a need for a vcr (nor the cost of buying tapes to record on), not to mention there is less downtime and outages, unlike cable.

We have 100 XM Music stations, great movies without commercials, and awesome shows from England which were not available with cable. Direct Tv has introduced us to shows we never knew existed, as well as enabled us to recieve shows we only wished we could get with cable.

Here are some more facts about directtv, then here are more:

DirecTV will offer a free High Definition DVR.

There are fewer outages on average than Cable and tend to be remedied very fast.

Movie Channels galore, even ones that are only available through DirectTV.
They have better pricing for the same service levels as cable, plus Pay-Per-View and On-Demand services.

Music Channels like XM Satellite Radio music, directtv is the very best in this arena.

Local Channels are available via DirectTV Satellite also.

A wide array of multi-lingual options are available on satellite that you just can't get with cable. DirectTV offers 15+ international type packages for International Channels

I could go on, and why am I praising direct tv Satellite?, because we have been customers of DirectTV now for about 2 years, and everyday I thank myself for getting rid of cable. I was especially sick of seeing all these programs in the paper TV guide that we just simply could not get, not even for a bigger price. Prices, yes we felt ripped off, but at first thought, if we switch to Satellite and don't like it, what then. Let me tell you, it was immediatly apparant that we had done the right thing.

Why am I telling you about direct tv and satellites, because it is my mission to stop all my friends and readers from continuing to get ripped off by cable. I get nothing out of it, except the pleasure that I may have made someones life happier and better.

Don't take my word for it, do a little research on your own. Next time you see that commercial that says "Stop Cable Theft", I want you to remember that YOU are the one being ripped off, and think of getting a Direct TV satellite instead!

Fender Precision Bass from Kit

Fender Precision Bass from Kit

I will post a pic later on this, but this bass was made from a Fender Kit, and sounds every bit as good as the store bought one. It has no logo, but if you know Fenders, then you know this.

Butter yellow, has only been played a couple times, as it was meant for me, but my back can't handle the weight of a guitar of any kind.

Small chip in the paint here or there, because I have no case, and it sits on a stand.

Bass is worth $450, but will take $275...

Contact me if interested.

How Musicians and Record Companies are Cheated on the Web

How Musicians and Record Companies are Cheated on the Web ---------It sounds like a great deal - most websites promise you: 50% of the income from the sale of your downloads a level playing field against the big stars (oops - they say "against the products of the big (bad) record companies") that you will be heard by record companies and/or big audiences worldwide Well, it sounds very good - actually it sounds so good that it most probably is not true. In reality this "win-win" business model is nothing new at all. It has been practiced by radio stations all over the world for most of the last century. Some radio broadcasters like WDR (a huge German radio broadcaster) or Jazz FM (a London-based smooth-jazz station) are almost exactly like this - they have their own record store/mail-order operations selling some albums of the music they play. In their case though, the record companies (or in the case of jazz FM, sometimes musicians selling directly to the radio station) usually get about 70% of the final sales price to the consumer and therefore a higher percentage. Actually, this is not the full story of the problem. These Internet music sites are really basically the same as radio stations, except that they are usually more convenient to the audience and give them even less of a reason to buy albums. The reality of the income structure of internet music sites is that they make between 80% and 90% of their income from advertising and hardly any money from sales of downloads. If you don#t believe this, have a look at some of the sites and check out the quarterly earning reports of mp3.com, which can be found among other places at the SEC website ( www.sec.gov). Of this income, the musicians get nothing. This is in contrast with radio, where they at least get something from advertising income, since radio stations have to pay between 2.5 and 6% of their advertising or mandatory (state radio) income for the use of music in most countries. The 50% of download income would be acceptable if a website does not sell advertising at all - or if it also pays a decent share of the advertising income (lets say about 30% to 90%) to all the musicians according to the percentage of their pageviews of the overall sites pageviews. Level playing field - ridiculous, since being somewhere even on a heavily trafficked website is about the same as sitting on a busy street corner and waiting until someone asks you to play a song. The real strengths of large record companies and big stars is partially quality, partially very good and often expensive marketing. The websites do not advertise for you - if anything, they advertise themselves, which they sometimes do with some illegal schemes, as mp3.com and Napster have shown recently. So what they really bring for a musician is that he does not have to have CDs manufactured. For this (and the very cheap webspace .. since you can usually get a free homepage almost everywhere) they charge 50% of the income from CD sales, should any occur. If you look at it from this side, it is an exorbitant amount of money to charge for saving a musician the trouble and about US-$ 1.500,- to have about 1.000 CDs manufactured (which he can sell at concerts - if he is able to perform live.) If you think record companies will check a musician out because he/she is on mp3.com or another such site - forget about it. Most record company people that I know would never go to such a site after their first visit, since there are usually thousands of tracks that just sound like bad copies of already successful bands. To find something like this, you do not have to go to a website - you go out to a hotel lobby , hotel bar or a neighborhood club to hear this. The normal audiences act very similar - the main search terms on the web are combinations of the words mp3, free and the name of a famous musician - no one just looks for mp3s by any musician.

Grab a Free Music Lesson

If you would like a copy of this lesson, just click the Scribd Logo in the upper left to go to a page that will allow you to download the ebook or imbed it into your own website.

Read this document on Scribd: musicrva music lesson

Beginner's Lesson Brought to you by MUSICRVA.COM Learning the notes of the piano (01) This concludes lesson #1. Whole & Half Step Intervals (02) Note: Please pay attention to this lesson as you will need to know about whole & half step intervals to learn scales, chords, and other concepts. This concludes lesson #2. Sharps & Flats (03) This concludes lesson #3. The basics of Sight reading (04) This concludes lesson #4. The basics of Rhythm and Note Values (05) This concludes lesson #5. "Conclusion" The key to learning the notes on the piano is to simply practice frequently. I've shown you the notes --now its your job to familiarize yourself with the piano. That is, do exercises, practice, and play major scales to work out your fingers (make them faster). With whole step and half steps, simply remember that half steps are from "key to key" while whole steps "always skip a key." You will need to know this concept when playing major and minor scales, chords, and progressions. Also remember that each black key has two names --- for example, C# can also be called Db. Once you grasp on to this concept, you'll be set! With Lesson 5 - "The basics of Rhythm and note values", I know it was hard to learn rhythm without the sound examples. However, it is helpful to use your hand to clap the rhythm. For example, quarter notes fall on all 4 beats of a measure. This means simply clapping your hand 4 times (while saying "1-2-3-4"). With half notes, you say " 1 - 2 - 3 - 4" but only clap on "1" and "3." With whole notes, simply say "1-2-3-4" while clapping only on the first beat since a whole step takes up four beats in a measure. I hope you enjoyed this little course. Please visit the website and join our FORUM for freebies and more!
